Major Projects of Summer 2009
The BOT and the undergrads are coordinating some major projects during Summer 2009 designed to enable the current facilities to last “in good form” until the upcoming major renovation is complete. These projects address long term maintenance and quality of life issues that affect the ability of the undergrads to recruit new members now and the perception the alumni have of the level of care shown for the property.
This will be the last major round of work on the property until the upcoming major renovation.
Social Quarters Touch-ups - Exterior and Interior
We are repairing and replacing exterior trim and gutters that need it. When this work is complete, we will have a professional firm power wash the exterior to remove deep-seated dirt and other contaminants.
Anticipate a much more appealing presentation of the TKE House, Georgia Tech’s Front Door, when you come by in the fall.
On the inside, a new color scheme and window treatments, moving the trophy cases, and general repairs and clean-up.
Reflecting Film on Dormitory Windows
To make the appearance of the north-facing windows of the dormitory more uniform and appealing, the BOT bought and the undergrads installed reflecting film on all the windows that face the alley.
Dormitory Bathrooms and Halls Rehabs
Showers, sinks and cabinets that had simply worn out and would no longer respond to cleaning are being replaced.
We are using tiles left over from the 1996 get-rid-of-that-carpet-before-it-walks-out-on-its-own project to replace worn out flooring in the dormitory.
The Conference Room
The conference room has seen a lot of changes recently, starting with some new furniture donated by various parties. Changes this summer include new paint, new white board, and some electronics. It truly looks like a conference room now!
Major Kitchen Overhaul
We had not rethought the kitchen for 15 years and it needed major repairs and equipment upgrades. As well, part of our membership development plan includes having members help with meal preparation - actually acquiring some kitchen sense that will help them later in life. So we are starting to convert our kitchen from a service facility to a teaching facility. Tasks include a major scrub-down, new non-skid floor, refinished walls, and new and refurbished equipment to make it possible to make make more and buy less pre-made.
All work was completed in time for the kitchen to return to use when the undergrads returned for rush.
The Ladies’ Head - Refurbished
Paint, polish, and some new fixtures in the room that started it all in 1993…
Dormitory Stairwells Repaired
The lower flights of both east and west wells had neared the ends of their useful lives. Metalwork and treads were repaired and the wells repainted.
