Volunteer

All Greek organizations are eager to have the help of volunteers.  Fortunately, advising is not the thankless “black hole” it used to be.  There is plenty of gratifying work to do in TKE.

Advising need not be limited to our own Chapter.  The lessons we have learned in over 60 years of unbroken existance at Georgia Tech would be useful in TKE chapters anywhere.  Currently, the only Beta-Pi Teke who advises elsewhere serves as the grand province adviser of North Carolina and as the chairman of the board of the soon-to-be Upsilon-Nu chapter at UNC-Chapel Hill.

There are many opportunities within TKE, depending on the time you are willing to commit and your area(s) of expertise:

  • chapter adviser
  • campus advisor
  • board member
  • province adviser
  • grand province adviser

The role of chapter adviser is usually the most challenging as this involves frequent contact with the undergraduates.  The CA is usually the first alumnus involved if there is a risk management incident.  However, this position offers the greatest potential for having a positive effect on the lives of undergraduate members.

Campus advisors (formerly faculty advisers) help the chapter gain access to university resources and to understand the way the university works.  They may be faculty or staff.

Board members’ roles depend on how structured the board is.   Some, like our own BOT, divide responsibilities up explicitly among members while others operate less formally.

The province adviser role probably offers the most flexibility in terms of time and expertise.    Grand province advisers are the lead volunteers in a province (often a state or part of a state) and coordinate the work of all the volunteers in the state.

If you are interested in advising, contact the offices of the Grand Chapter (OGC) and let them know where you live and in what capacity you could help.

(If you live in the Atlanta area, you may end up working with the Beta-Pi after all.  If you live in North Carolina, you will be working with another Beta-Pi to enhance the TKE brand there!)
